The smaller steeds bred by the Iuchi family are bred not for speed or power, but for intelligence. Iuchi riding steeds are so intelligent that they can be trained to respond to a variety of commands, both verbal and from hand gestures in sign language. Stories of horses assisting with complex math problems are probably apocryphal.
