Over the years, Rokugan’s leaders have made significant efforts to ensure as many people speak a similar version of Rokugani as possible. Imperials understand language’s power to unify a people, influencing a population’s connections to identity and the past. Whether an individual or community maintains their own languages and dialects is of no large concern to the Imperials. The Great Clans have made concentrated efforts to preserve their own dialects. Many families have championed the Empire’s diverse traditions, and with the realities of trade and convenience, Rokugan remains a land of many distinct languages.
The common Rokugani language is rooted in the efforts of Lady Doji, the founder of the Crane Clan. Working alongside many scholars, Doji created a unified language that she hoped would allow all the Empire’s peoples to understand one another. It was rooted in many tongues of the peoples predating the Empire, and it adapted the written script of the Land of Four Rivers as well as other local scripts. The current Rokugani language has evolved over generations; while the old language has been preserved in the form of Courtly Rokugani, it has also splintered into many unique dialects and expressions for less formal use.
