Uncommon Languages in Rokugan

Seção Language

Texto

The following are uncommon or rare languages that even well-traveled Rokugani are unlikely to have heard. A Rokugani who has heard one of these languages has probably experienced it very infrequently.

Nonhuman Languages

Rokugani often struggle with the languages spoken by nezumi and naga. Stone-Click, the language of Shadowlands nezumi, incorporates pheromones and musks alongside spoken words, aspects that are impossible for humans to replicate. The language of the Shinomen naga, River Speech, incorporates body language along with released scents that are “tasted” to convey meaning.

Qamari Languages

The people of the massive Qamarist Caliphate speak a wide variety of languages, but the most common is Nehiri. Nehiri is divided into two specific dialects, one for day-to-day vernacular and one reserved for more formal situations. Additionally, a more poetic version of Nehiri, with refined prosody rules, has arisen with the spread of Qamarism, with the goal of further unifying followers of the Nameless Prophet.

Ujik Languages

The many tribes of the Ujik peoples speak distinct and different languages, but these languages are similar enough with their common root that a person who is fluent in one can generally be understood by a person fluent in another. Additionally, the Ujik use a trade form of the language for commerce and legal agreements.

Yobanjin Languages

The many Yobanjin tribes have vastly different languages from one another, existing in written and spoken forms. However, most of these have roots in the languages of the peoples who predated Rokugan, and represent natural evolutions or forks from those languages. Larger Yobanjin tribes have several dialects, and it is not uncommon for a Yobanjin tongue to have overlapping vocabulary with nearby lands, including Rokugan.
