Bushidō In Historical Japan

Seção Using Social AttributesQuadro Quadro lateral
Core p. 300

Texto

Rokugani Bushidō is quite

different from anything that existed historically in Japan. While historical

samurai had deeply held convictions that they lived

and died for, there is no

single text that defined Bushidō for all samurai.

Outside of Japan, cultural understanding of Bushidō

comes in large part from

retrospective efforts to

understand the past. Inazo Nitobe’s Bushido: The Soul of Japan (1900)

is one text written by a

Japanese scholar to explain Bushidō to English

speakers. Nitobe offers “Military-Knight-Ways” as

a translation of Bushidō,

and expands it to the “‘Precepts of Knighthood,’

the noblesse oblige of the

warrior class.”

Much as the code of chivalry in Europe has been romanticized to fit

with the values of later writers, Nitobe’s account of Bushidō is a product of its own time (after the era

of samurai), and it can help readers understand

the history of Western

views on Bushidō.
