Roleplaying the Spirits
Texto
Excepting those from Tengoku and Jigoku, spirits don’t operate on a continuum of good and evil. They act according to their nature, which is governed by its own, inscrutable rules. These creatures have no consideration for the welfare or desires of the samurai they encounter. The exception to this is ancestor spirits, who are intrinsically invested in seeing their descendants succeed and act in ways that reflect well on their ancestors.
Thus, you should strive to make an otherworldly being’s motives mysterious, as well as use doublespeak, riddles, or illusions to trick your PCs. The very same spirits who help the PCs on a lark may turn on the party for their own amusement later.
Adding supernatural elements to investigations or exploratory scenes can be especially effective at making the characters approach obstacles with fresh eyes and a sense of wonder—and usually, by the end, a new wariness about dealing with spirits and monsters.
