Descrição

Mirumoto Umeyo stood between the magistrate and the village elder, tempers heated as they debated the fate of the thief, currently in chains.

“Justice is quite clear,” the young magistrate said. “This thief has stolen many times and has been unrepentant, so he must give up his life. Only then will the offenses ever end.”

“The crimes are minor. And his family will suffer with his death,” the village elder said, her back stooped and leaning on the magistrate’s arm.

Umeyo couldn’t help but smile at the magistrate’s discomfort, caught between an official’s sense of propriety and mercy for the elder. She decided to lean on this mercy when she said, “Of course the thief must give up his life, but not in that way.”

The other two women looked at her, puzzled. “Other lands interpret life in different ways. Give the thief’s ‘life’ to me. I will mold him into a different person. And thus his old ‘life’ will end, but a new one shall begin.”
