While most Rokugani war ponies are hindered in full barding, Unicorn barding utilizes several innovations to make armor lighter and more comfortable for the horse wearing it. Most barding is made from laminated plates set over a tent of padded cloth and includes a unique face covering similar to the war masks of samurai armor. Unicorn barding is generally considered superior, owing to better coverage, elaborate designs, and the care taken to ensure each piece of custom-made armor is comfortably fitted to the horse. Expensive and time-intensive to don, a suit of full Unicorn barding has become a status symbol for wealthy lords, worn more frequently in festivals and parades than for warfare.
Unicorn barding can be worn only by horses, ponies, and other equine mounts.
