The tengu are a race of bird-like yōkai who can soar through the air and change their appearances to great effect. The tradition, called the Mask of Air, shrouds the tengu in illusions that are so complete that they feel real to the touch. Those that study this practice often wander from their mountain homes to explore Rokugan to learn more about the peoples and creatures that they share the Emerald Empire with.
